Why having a pet rock is more biblical than you think

In Joshua God commands the Israelites to collect 12 rocks as a reminder that he split the jordan river before them.
What?
Really? Are you kidding me?
HE *gulp* SPLIT THE RIVER IN HALF.
They needed a reminder for that?...
Yes. They did. And so do we.
Because we are so forgetful.
We have tunnel vision.
We pray that God would provide a house for us and 2yrs later complain that we have to clean it.
We spend college wondering if God will ever bring us ‘the one’ but a few years into marriage we can’t stand to be around them. We treat them like garbage and we argue over toothpaste and toilet seats.
God, please provide a Job.
God, I hate this job and the people I work with.
I want a family.
If only I were single again...
3 days into missions trip: “poor them...we are so blessed”
3 months after missions trip: “poor us...we are so unfortunate”
We zoom out so far from what God has done that we barely see it. On the other hand we zoom in so close to our current problems that its all we see.
‘What have you done for me lately?’
Someone should re-release that song as a worship song because that's how we treat God.
We are like ‘whats-her-face’ from 50 first dates. We don’t remember the faithfulness of God from yesterday.
He forgets our unfaithfulness and we forget his faithfulness.
He doesn’t treat us like our unfaithfulness deserves and we don’t treat him like his faithfulness deserves.
We forget. God knows this. So he says take some rocks. As a memorial. Have ‘reminders’ so you don’t forget.
I don’t know you or your story but I’m convinced that if you will just pick up some ‘rocks’ along your journey and consistently look at them as a reminder of what God has done in your life [what he has spared you from/how many prayers he has answered e.t.c], you will worry less. You will complain less. You will be less anxious. I guarantee it.
Seriously, try it.
I triple dog dare you to really remember how faithful God has been and to complain at the same time. You can’t. Its impossible. Two things Jesus followers can’t do at the same [remember and complain/worry more].
And oh yea, don’t ‘forget’ the cross and that whole complete forgiveness and unconditional love thing.
I honestly feel so stupid when I bump into an old ‘rock’. God has been so good. How could I fear and doubt after all He has done?
Because I forget.
I need more rocks. And so do you.
Not rocks buried in a closet somewhere. No, we need visible rocks in our pockets and in our cars and on our nightstands. Like a pet we can’t ignore, we need visible constant reminders of his faithfulness.
Ashley and I brought home an old ripped dress that bebe wore all the time in haiti. It’s one of our ‘rocks’. I haven’t seen it in months. I bet I’d be less impatient with my daughter if I remembered how God did the impossible just less than a year ago.
Argh!
Anyone else forget Gods goodness as much as I do?
Lets do something different today.
You tell me something significant God has done in your life and I’ll try to suggest a ‘rock’ for you so you don't forget.
